![]() ![]() Discus are not comfortable with too much happening all the time and nowhere to retreat to. They were either running around like lunatics kicking up bits of gravel while the discus tried to eat or beating the discus to the food! Not to mention the sleep derivation by going all night! I've also observed that since I moved the Discus to their own tank (only Cardinal tetra's x20 and a pair of flying foxes for the algae) they have never looked better. In fact I ended up taking all of ours out. Also the catfish/pleco type species- I'd keep to one pair. If the tetra's get a bit off colour from the high temp. ![]() Glowlights and rummynose who prefer water, I think its 21 -25 degrees would not be my choice for a dedicated discus tank, running at 28+ all the time. My main Lesson learnt - Choose who's home it is, primarily and add only others who belong in the same water conditions OR perform a job for the primary species. They may survive, they won't "flourish" with health, colour or growth. If like me, you're keen on Discus, then remember that they will not compete for food (except amongst selves) and a tank full of others will often deprive them of a decent feed. It was my first aquarium (6x2x2 - 650Lt) and I did a fair bit of impulse buying which ended in disaster (deaths/illness too many prob's to mention individually here.) I was stocked at about 20% capacity Does anyone know if you have to take shrimp into account when attempting to estimate filter loads and stocking levels?Īs a Discus newbie myself (started Feb06) I'm like to share some of my initial mistakes. Then endlers I'm not sure if they will just be a fast moving protein snack for discus or not. I'd quite like to have the Rams, SAE and Gouramis too but I'm not sure if thats too many fish for a 180L. ![]() = Possible Dither Fish (will only have one shoal) =ġ2 Rummynose Tetras (Hemigrammus bleheri) - 2" x 12 = 24"ġ2 Cardinal Tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi) - 2" x 12 = 24"ġ2 Glowlight Tetras (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) - 2" x 12 = 24" ![]() I'm thinking of stocking the tank with the following:Ĥ Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) - 6" x 4 = 24"Ģ Bristlenose Catfish (Ancistrus temmincki) - 4" x 2 = 8"ġ Simese Fighting Fish (Betta Splendens) - 3" x 1 = 3"Ģ Zebra Loach (Botia striata) - 3" x 2 = 6"Ģ Bronze Corys (Corydoras aeneus) - 2"x 2 = 4"ģ Amano Shrimp (Caridina japonica)- 1.5" x 3 = 4.5"ġ Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus siamensis) - 6" x 1 = 6"Ģ Bolivian Rams (Microgeophagus altispinosa) - 3" x 2 = 6"Ģ Honey Gourami (Colisa chuna) - 3" x 2 = 6"Ħ-12 Endlers Livebearers (Poecilia wingei) - 1" x 12 = 12" Walstad.Įxtra Heater (split the load over two units rather than one),Įxtra Filter Media (for an eheim canister filter to augment whats in the internal filter). It would be a fully planted low tech tank using the techniques from "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium" () by Diana L. The tank I'm looking at buying is the Juwel Rio 180 () which is a 180 litre tank that comes complete with built in heater, lighting and filteration. I've read everything I could find online and in books but I'd like your advice on my current planned set-up. Who would of thought you could go "fishing" in an aquarium.I currently have two small community tanks (60 & 65 litres) and I'm thinking of upgrading to one bigger tank and trying discus. If there are easier ways, lease let me know. Replace the net if you still have others you want to catch. On the second feeding I stand ready and as soon as the targeted fish is in the net I lift it and catch him! There are usually other fish in the net as well, just let these out one by one making sure you don't let you victim escape. I do not disturb them the first feeding, which makes them relaxed about the net. (oh yes this does take a bit of patience, even a day or two, but your plants remain in tact) now place food pellets in the net and wait. Put a net in the tank (mine is 200mm x 150mm) in an open area with opening facing the front of the tank. I don' know if this has been discussed before, but here is my method and it seems to work. The other day I needed to move some YOYO loaches and after struggling for about 30 mins decided to change tact. I don't about you guys but every time I need to move fish around, I end up causing havoc with my plants, logs and other items hanging in the tank. ![]()
